Community Seed Fair Promotes Biodiversity in Rain Communities

Under the Integrated Resources Management of Water and Ecosystem in Central Hills of Nepal Project, a Community Seed Fair was held in Tobang, Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality-2, bringing together 18 farmers from Rain Communities to exchange and preserve indigenous seeds. Organized by SVSI, the event presented 34 varieties of traditional seeds, including 7 near-extinct varieties, highlighting the urgent need to protect Nepal’s agroecological heritage. Farmers expressed both motivation and concern, noting the threats posed by modern agriculture and climate change to these vital genetic resources. The fair not only celebrated biodiversity but also promoted efforts to establish a community seed bank, having a hope to step toward safeguarding Nepal’s agricultural legacy for future generations.
