Over 1,600 People Benefit from Free Eye Camps in Kalika Municipality

Chitwan, Nepal – Sapana Village Social Impact (SVSI), in partnership with Bharatpur Eye Hospital, successfully conducted a series of free eye camps across Kalika Municipality, Chitwan, providing essential eye care services to more than 1,600 community members and students within a single week.

The initiative aimed to improve access to vision screening and eye health services in rural communities where specialized optometry care remains limited and access to hospitals can be challenging.

Community Eye Camps

The first camp was held on 3 May in Shaktikhor, where 208 adults received comprehensive eye examinations. During the screening, 44 individuals were diagnosed with cataracts.

A second camp took place at Siddhi Health Post from 4–5 May, serving 182 community members. An additional 21 cataract cases were identified during these screenings.

In total, 65 patients were recommended for cataract surgery. Of these, 52 patients successfully underwent surgery through Bharatpur Eye Hospital. Five patients did not attend their scheduled procedures, while eight were unable to undergo surgery due to underlying health conditions requiring further medical attention.

School Eye Screening Programme

The programme also focused on improving eye health among school children. On 6 May, eye screenings were conducted at Majhwang Secondary School and Chaturmukhi School, reaching 233 and 700 students respectively.

On 8 May, the team continued screenings at Kalyanchour Basic School, Majhwang Primary School, Kalika Primary School, and Chherbang Basic School, examining an additional 359 students across the four institutions.

Among the students screened, seven were provided with prescription spectacles to support their learning and daily activities. One student was referred to Bharatpur Eye Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Improving Vision, Improving Lives

Access to quality eye care remains a significant challenge in many rural areas of Nepal. Undiagnosed vision problems can affect educational performance, productivity, and overall quality of life. Through collaborative initiatives such as these free eye camps, early detection and treatment of eye conditions can help prevent avoidable vision loss and improve opportunities for both children and adults.

Sapana Village Social Impact and Bharatpur Eye Hospital remain committed to expanding access to essential healthcare services and improving the well-being of communities throughout the region.
